Unlike some people I’ve never really known what I wanted to do. Whenever anyone asked me I just opted for a career that involved anything I was obsessed with at the time, so my future job journey has ventured from Photographer to Olympic Dressage rider. The list was varied and endless.
This uncertainty made my choice with what to study at university pretty open, thus I chose to study Psychology at the University of Leeds. Now I know what you’re thinking (ironically), what is a girl who can read minds working in a digital marketing agency? Firstly, I can’t read minds and secondly to most people’s surprise psychology graduates are some of the most employable people.
Psychology degrees do one thing very well, they create rounded people. Not only are you expected to input statistical information into an SPSS programme and perform analysis on the results, but psychology also demands the writing abilities of an English graduate and knowledge of the brain similar to that of a medic.
The beauty of this is that all your course friends wanted to be something different. Within my year alone we had people dreaming to be future clinical psychologists, teachers, paramedics, palaeontologists, and even one girl who wanted to be a zoo keeper! Half way through second year I still had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and I felt like time was running out! Numerous hours I spent at career talks with the terrified thought in my head that I was never going to find what I wanted to do. Finally, one evening there was a talk about advertising. To cut to the chase I left the careers talk that evening and I never sat in another one again.
Graduating this summer I knew I wanted to go into advertising or marketing, however due to a jam packed summer the last thing on my mind was work. Soon after graduation an unusual call from a family friend and a few wise words brought me where I am today. “Charlotte needs to get into Digital Marketing”. Searching digital marketing agencies in Leeds lead me to the twentysix website and the rest is history.
Being a graduate in a company such as twentysix is literally a dream. Having no prior knowledge in marketing means I am working in a few departments within the company to find where I fit best! Coming from a business family myself I’ve always found it easy talking to new people and am used to an office environment. It’s only been a few months and I already feel part of this slightly wacky family! In my position as Graduate Executive I am working in the New Business and Social side of twentysix, meaning I’m working on the twentysix’s tenders, decks, case studies, brainstorms and social media aspects.
Advice I would give to other graduates is once you find out what you want to do go for it, even if you don’t want to go into a job straight away. Whether it be travelling, volunteering or further education, do it! Honestly, what are you waiting for?
